With all the homeschooling options available to you in Alaska, it’s important to know what makes FOCUS Homeschool different from all the rest. FOCUS Homeschool is through the Chugach School District and Chugach was the first district in the nation to develop what is now known as competency-based education.  Since its inception, this model of education has made great strides across the nation in meeting students’ educational needs.

So, how is competency-based education different from the traditional model of education most of us had as children?

First, our entire system is designed to conform to where a child is actually developing in every subject, as opposed to an arbitrary standard of, “where they should be” based on age or grade.  Each student receives an individualized learning plan that is student-centered, rather than the cookie-cutter approach. Students are individuals who are gifted in a variety of ways and who develop in each subject at different rates.

Secondly, students progress through our standards at their own pace.  This allows students to take more time to develop in subjects that they find more challenging, while, at the same time, allowing them to progress faster through subjects that come more readily to them.

Thirdly, our competency-based approach affords students and families the opportunity to choose their own way of learning.  This means families choose their own curriculum, projects, activities, etc. to meet student learning styles, interests, and needs.  Of course, our Advisory Teachers are here to help you navigate those options, but ultimately, our families have the freedom and autonomy to choose what works best for them.
